Police in Blantyre Tuesday arrested former Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) Director General Godfrey Itaye, sources from Fiscal police and Macra confirmed.
However, National Police Spokesperson James Kadadzera refused to provide information on the arrests saying he had no information on the issue.
However, a source at the fiscal police offices in Blantyre told The Daily Times that two people, one Macra employee and Itaye, currently Lilongwe Water Board Chief Executive Officer, were called for questioning on matters related to fraud suspected to have happened during the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) administration.
“I can confirm that Itaye is in our custody and will spend a night here,” he said.
An official at Macra also confirmed the development.
“It’s nothing to do with Lilongwe Water Board. He drove to Blantyre himself where he was summoned,” said the source.
Police on Friday arrested Macra’s Director of Finance Ben Chitsonga and Procurement Specialist Joseph Ngalawa for allegedly buying Democratic Progressive Party cloth worth K100 million.
